Personal Bible Study

Where do I go from here?

How do I grow?

How do I connect with God?

Bible Study: Time of Day

Personal Bible Study

“When my private world is in order, it will be because I am convinced that the inner world of the spiritual must govern the outer world of activity” – Gordon MacDonald

We are followers of Christ. Let's see what Christ did…

TIME: Early in the morning

Mark 1:35 (KJV)
"And in the morning, rising up a great while before day”

There is NO fixed rule to this, however it is adviseable to set aside some time during the early morning. During this time you are surrounded with the peace and quiet of daybreak. Should this not be possible use anytime which is suitable during your day or even during the late evening.

It's important to fill your mind with “good stuff”, the Word of God, for wisdom and guidance to equip you before you are exposed to any “pollution” or "distraction" from the world.

A “busy” mind, brings interference in hearing God's voice. Once our emotions are challenged during the course of the day with its responsibilities and demands, it becomes difficult to hear God's voice amongst all these "filtered interferences"

According Gordon MacDonald, we have a public life and a private life.

You are on your way to give 90% of the day towards your public life: therefore start off by investing 10% quality time of your private life by spending it with your Creator.

According MacDonald your private world will be in order, because you make a daily choice to monitor its state of orderliness.

This “personal silent time” is a time to make adjustments, to be focussed, and have perspective of where you are heading. This is a time to be quiet and for reflection. This is your “top-up time” for the rest of the day, before the rush begins!

With the start of the new day, you may cast all worries, and anxieties upon God for that specific day.

You can focus and say: “just for today Lord”…help me to be calm and to behave like you would Jesus…etc.” (Read Galatians 5:22, 2 Timothy 1:7, 1 Peter 5:7)

PLACE: Quiet Place

Mark 1:35 (KJV)
“He went out, and departed into a solitary place , and there prayed”

Find a “solitary place” a quiet place away from any disturbances. This is your time with God, and ask your family not to disturb you during this time, as you are spending quality time with God.

DURATION

If this is new to you, start off with 10-15 minutes, and then gradually increase your "quiet time" with God. To quote Joyce Meyer, "there is NO set amount, the Bible does not tell us how long to study, however, the Bible tells us that we will be blessed if we study the Word regularly!" This is your quality time with God, enjoy it.

Record Keeping…Keep a journal or scrapbook at hand

By means of a journal or a scrapbook, you can keep track of your personal spiritual-growth experiences.

Example :

  • My reborn-experience : The changes in my life thereafter
  • Water Baptism : My experience of the Baptism and the fruits thereof in my life, such as breaking with bad habits, and new blessings.
  • Baptism in the Holy-Spirit : Receiving of spiritual gifts i.e. speaking in tongues, gift of healing, gift of faith, prophecy etc.
  • Your love walk : How God revealed something to you through His word i.e. How to have faith, how to handle conflict at work, how to stay calm, how to bear more good fruit etc, also write down things you are trusting God for.
  • Reading the Bible : My first revelations through the Holy-Spirit
  • Power of Prayer: Keep record of your prayer requests and receive dates. If you seek to experience the power of prayer, according Yonggi Cho “Pray and obey”
    (1 Samuel 15:22).

PERSONAL TESTIMONIES:

This is a personal test of faith, where you rely totally on God to rescue you! Remember, without faith, it's impossible to please God.

Personal testimonies are "building blocks" of your personal faith in God .

Reviewing blessings which you received earlier in your growth and walk with God,will encourage you to serve the Lord faithfully. They are reliable, and trustworthy, because you are the witness thereof.

During times of tribulation you can refer to them as something to hold on to, to remind God how He helped you in “that” situation, and believing in Him that He will help you in your current situation!

Read the Word of God to refresh your knowledge of the many blessings God has given his people throughout history and how He fulfilled them.

Revelations 12:11 (KJV)
“And they overcame him [satan] by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony ”

When you need encouragement, review the Lord's blessings in your life. Reflect on where you are at, and thank the Lord that you are not where you used to be!

BIBLE READING
[New Reborn's reading plan]

Reading: To “read” according to the Oxford Pocket dictionary, means to interpret mentally, also to reproduce mentally.

When reading your Bible it's important to comprehend or to understand what you have rread!

Don't “scan” in order to be able to say: “I've done this much reading”. Quality (comprehensive) reading is more of value than quantative reading! Ask yourself questions like “what does God want to tell me, or teach me in this passage?” “What have I learned?”

Ask the Holy Spirit to open up the Word of God, that you may learn from your reading. You need to determine what God is sharing with you in a passage, and how He would like for you to apply certain scriptures in your life.

To read between the lines, means to discover or search for the hidden meaning… which could only be done with the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Acknowledge the Holy Spirit as a Person for He is a Person, The 3 rd in the Holy Trinity : The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit) and ask Him to guide you in your reading.

WHERE SHOULD I BEGIN WITH MY READING?

  • We recommend that your start reading the Gospel “Good News” of John .
  • Read at least one chapter a day.(The purpose is to get a better understanding of the life of Jesus. After all, He is our ultimate example.)
  • After reading the Gospel of John, read the three epistles of John. (Read this two to four times, before starting with other books of the Bible)
  • Then read James, 1 Peter & 2 Peter, Matthew, Mark, Luke and Acts.
  • Follow this by reading the remaining of the NEW TESTAMENT.
  • Thereafter, start of with the Old Testament in Genesis and complete the reading with the Old Testament .

METHODS OF STUDY

According to Joyce Meyer from the reading "How to study the Bible" in the "Enjoy Everyday Life". March 2006 – “the word study means to apply the mind, examine closely, fix the mind closely upon a certain subject, or to read and examine for the purpose to have a deeper understanding”

Study : According the Oxford Pocket Dictionary : Acquiring of information or knowledge esp. from books: Make a study of, investigate or examine (subject)

  • Book by book
The Bible [Old and New Testament], consists of a collection of sixty six (66) books. The book by book study method, is a "in depth" study of each book
  • Topical

  • Biographical
